In 2009, the Diocesan Historical Archive, thanks to the financial support of the Diocese of Bergamo, announced the creation of an annual scholarship in memory of Monsignor Antonio Pesenti, archivist for over forty years and the then bishop’s registrar (1981-2007).

The scholarship, valued at € 1,500.00 (one thousand five hundred euros), is assigned to a research project concerning one of the various aspects of the history of the diocese of Bergamo, and using the bibliographic and documentary patrimony preserved in the Diocesan Historical Archive.

The object of the investigation is free from chronological or thematic constraints and does not intend the use of sources to be limited in any way. The initiative, aimed primarily at helping young scholars, aims at encouraging historical research, especially through the knowledge and use of unpublished sources.

Monsignor Antonio Pesenti, who died on 4th October 2009 aged 82, was considered to be the “historical memory” of the diocese of Bergamo. He was born on 13th August 1927 in Villa di Serio. After ordination, received on 3rd June 1950 by Bishop Adriano Bernareggi, he obtained his school-leaving certificate in Sacred Theology and graduated in archival science, paleography and library science. He chose to join the community of the Priests of the Sacred Heart. For all his life Monsignor Pesenti was faithful to the charism of his community. He entered service in the bishop’s offices in 1958 as added archivist, becoming archivist owner in 1964 and bishop’s registrar from 1981, holding these positions without interruption until 2007, serving Bishops Giuseppe Piazzi, Clemente Gaddi, Giulio Oggioni and Roberto Amadei.

He had to his credit numerous historical publications, essential not only in local research:
