The Historical Archives of the Diocese of Bergamo is housed in the Bishop’s Palace, the old palazzo used as an episcopal residence since the Middle Ages. The latter is accessed through a large hall decorated with beautiful 13th century frescoes, the so-called “Aula Picta”, which welcomes visitors and acts as the entrance to the large palace gate.
The archive is located on three floors of the building, on the ground floor, the study room and on the first and third deposits. The site is equipped to meet public safety requirements and the proper conservation of historic documents. Indeed, there are fire extinguishers and video cameras in each room. In particular, the store vault parameters are constantly monitored to ensure the suitable thermo-hygrometric microclimate in order to favour the preservation of such important historical material.
